Lexington Cemetery conducts History Walk
Lexington, KY-As The Lexington Cemetery approaches the 160th anniversary of the act by the Kentucky General Assembly that was approved on February 5, 1848 to incorporate The Lexington Cemetery and authorize it to establish a rural, or garden, cemetery, it is appropriate for The Lexington Cemetery to invite the community to join its staff for a History Walk.
The Lexington Cemetery invites the community to join them and Kentucky Historian Ronald Bryant for a History Walk of its grounds on Saturday September 8, 2007 at 10 a.m. beginning at the Henry Clay Monument.
Bryant will trace the history of Lexington and its cemetery created by the 1848 act of the legislature. Walkers will learn the significance of statuary, funeral and burial customs during different periods of history and about some of the interesting people who established and helped develop Lexington, once know as "The Athens of the West."
"Since its inception in 1848, the management and grounds staff of the community memorial site has devoted itself to developing and preserving the natural and historic beauty of the cemetery," said Dan Scalf, president and general manager of The Lexington Cemetery. "As part of their community service, the cemetery enjoys sharing the history of people memorialized in The Lexington Cemetery with people of Central Kentucky."
The tour will last approximately 1.5 hours. The walk is handicapped accessible with paved roadways that make it easier for parents and grandparents with children and people in wheelchairs.
The Lexington Cemetery always provides a wonderful natural outdoors classroom setting to learn about history.
